A legal battle is brewing between chairman of the Police Officers' Association (POA) Senior Superintendent Wayne Cameron and Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake over the directive that the position be vacated.
SSP Cameron told Radio Jamaica News on Tuesday morning that the Commissioner overstepped his authority in issuing the directive.
The senior officer says this is based on the Constitution which governs the POA.
SSP Cameron said he will be meeting on Tuesday with his attorney to discuss the next steps.
He declined to comment further on the matter.
Dr. Blake issued a release on Monday indicating that SSP Cameron will no longer be granted audience at the High Command and is not permitted to represent the Jamaica Constabulary Force outside of official duties.
The Commissioner said the High Command was concerned that reports of alleged indiscipline and misconduct by the chairman may compromise the conduct of the POA, particularly at a time when the organisation is required to engage in highly technical salary and benefits negotiations with the government.
Dr. Blake said reports of the executive's failure to meet to conduct the business of the POA, as well as to convene a general meeting over several years have reinforced this position.
SSP Cameron was in July 2019, elected chairman of the Police Officers' Association, which represents personnel from the rank of Assistant Superintendent to Deputy Commissioner.
