'Lies!' PNP's Campbell threatens legal action against detractors

PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell

By Nakinskie Robinson

People's National Party (PNP) General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell has issued a stern warning to those purporting that he's among opposition members who have plundered funds from the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) to finance a by-election campaign for the party.

The opposition has come under increased pressure over the alleged actions of its members at the KSAMC and in the party's secretariat.

Dr. Campbell shot down comments from dancehall entertainer, Clifford 'Mr. Vegas' Smith about improper behaviour in public office.

The PNP General Secretary said for years, detractors have accused him of wrongdoing.

But he said he will not sit idly by and allow it to continue.

"Now dem a come tell lie 'bout me misallocate money. I don't work a parish council. I don't have no standing fi instruct no parish council, so I can't misappropriate anything. And any boy or girl weh seh suh, mi a dem a guh a courthouse," he warned.

He was speaking Sunday at the campaign launch for Damian Crawford who is being endorsed as the PNP's candidate for North West St. Catherine.

In a post on X Monday afternoon, Mr. Vegas apologised for the remarks made, adding that he does not have any proof of alleged wrongdoing regarding Dr. Campbell.

Meanwhile, Dr. Campbell also used the platform to dismiss Government Senator Abka Fitz-Henley's call for him to resign from the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ).

Senator Fitz-Henley made the call during his contribution to the State of the Nation Debate last Friday, following the publication of leaked conversations between Dr. Campbell and ousted PNP caretaker for Kingston Central, Lawrence Rowe.

Senator Fitz-Henley argued that Dr. Campbell's position as a commissioner of the ECJ is untenable and he must be removed.

But Dr. Campbell, who is also Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture, rejected that position.

"I have realised that they want to twist everything that is said and turn it how they want to turn it," he said, adding that he will continue to "speak on behalf of the local farmers in Jamaica because we must eat what we grow and we must grow what we eat, and we must export them".
