Life sentence upheld for man convicted of murdering girlfriend at Oaklands Apartment

Steven Causwell, the man convicted for the 2008 murder of his girlfriend Nadia Mitchell, has lost his appeal against his life imprisonment sentence.

The Court of Appeal published its judgment on Thursday, which affirmed the life sentence, and deemed it as commencing in October 2016.

Causwell, who was previously in a relationship with Miss Mitchell, was the prime suspect in the murder which took place at the Oaklands Apartment complex in St. Andrew.

Miss Mitchell's body was found in the yard of the gated apartment complex with 27 injuries.

Causwell denied that he killed her, but prosecutors used circumstantial evidence about his presence at the apartment, his admission that they had been arguing, and evidence of other persons who were there.

He appealed against the conviction, arguing that he did not receive a fair trial, that there were discrepancies in the evidence and that the judge did not adequately address these discrepancies.

However, the Court of Appeal ruled that there was an abundance of evidence available and the judge properly put it to the jury for consideration.

It agreed with the prosecution that under all the circumstances Causwell received a fair trial.

On that basis, it ruled that his life sentence will remain, but he must serve 20 years before becoming eligible for parole.
