PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell
Nearly a year after St. Ann Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna informed the leadership of the People's National Party (PNP) that she was stepping away from representational politics, the PNP is trying to convince Ms. Hanna to contest the next general election.
In August last year, Ms. Hanna announced that she was stepping aside as MP for South East St. Ann after 15 years.
Ms. Hanna, who lost the PNP leadership race to Mark Golding in 2020, outlined in a letter to the party leader a number of concerns which influenced her decision to exit representational politics.
But speaking Wednesday morning on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell disclosed that the party was now holding talks with Ms. Hanna to represent the party in another constituency.
"Comrade Hanna is a valuable member of the team and...I would love to have her on the slate of candidates. She and Comrade [Damion] Crawford and Comrade [Raymond] Pryce, I think, are part of the best team that the PNP has to offer. And it would be a joy for them to run in constituencies and to play a role in a future government of the party," Dr. Campbell indicated.
The PNP, in the meantime, has still not selected Ms. Hanna's replacement in South East St. Ann.
The PNP earlier this month held an internal poll in the constituency but none of the candidates was able to get at least 50 per cent plus one of the votes as required by the party's rule.
Dr. Kenneth Russell secured 46 per cent of the votes, Wavell Hinds, 31 per cent and Patricia Duncan Sutherland, 22 per cent.
The party's Election Monitoring Committee is not ruling out another selection exercise in the constituency to choose a standard bearer for the next general election.
Dr. Campbell said if a run-off is recommended, it would be a contest between the top two candidates - Dr. Russell and Mr. Hinds.
