Nakinskie Robinson reports
At least 20 active ammunition dealers in Jamaica are facing dwindling supplies, limiting their ability to fulfill orders from licensed gun owners, security companies and range operators.
It comes amid sweeping policies by United States President Donald Trump, which have had far-reaching implications for several countries, including Jamaica.
Licensed firearm holders are in a quandary as they are unable to procure their regular supply of ammunition.
Information is that there is a tightening and problems with the process of importation which has seemingly hit a snag.
As a result, firearm holders have been advised by licensed dealers that they are unable to meet their demands.
Gun owners are now questioning what is being done to ease the current dilemma.
When Radio Jamaica News sought to get a comment on the matter, the Firearm Licensing Authority explained that it is not within its mandate to deal with the importation of guns and ammunition.
Attempts to contact the Ministry of National Security, which has oversight and authority over the importation process, have been unsuccessful.
Efforts to contact a prominent long-standing importer and a distributor of guns and ammunition in the Corporate Area have also proven futile.
Currently, only one active distributor has indicated bullet stock, but questions loom as to how long the supply will hold.
There is uncertainty over whether the upcoming bird hunting season, which opens August 17 and closes September, will proceed as normal given the apparent shortage.
At this time, it is also unclear what exactly is causing the slowdown. However, in October 2024, there was a similar situation after the United States imposed crippling arms embargo on 36 countries including Jamaica.
The US Department of Commerce said the restrictions were implemented due to concerns about the illegal diversion and misuse of American made firearms in the region.
Millions of rounds of ammunition are imported by the government annually.
