Major crackdown on PPV drivers

In a major push to eliminate the indiscipline within Jamaica's transport sector, as of Monday, October 28, all drivers in the transport system and those wishing to enter will have to produce their driving history information before they are employed.

This was disclosed by Dion Chance, head of the Public Passenger Vehicle Modernization Council (PPVMC).

“The criteria is simple: the first step is that the driver needs to get his history done, I think there is a fee that the police will charge. After he gets that he returns to the association, along with the owner, and the registration will be done at the association level,” Chance said.

The PPVMC is made up of various transport associations island-wide, in a bid to rid the sector of indiscipline.

Only recently, insurance companies were complaining about the high cost of insuring public passenger vehicles, because of the indiscipline.

Chance said the insurance companies have a list of drivers on their system, who they have banned from receiving insurance, but these drivers are still in the system due to the lack of checks and balances.

He said the new system will see a link between the insurance companies, the association and the police.

The PPVMC has urged the drivers not to resist the move because, in the end, it will result in an improved transportation system.
