Malaria cases decline significantly

The Ministry of Health is reporting a further decline in malaria cases in Jamaica.

According to the Ministry, there have been eight confirmed cases of the disease since the start of the year.

Director of Health Promotion and Protection in the Ministry, Dr. Eva Lewis-Fuller, says two cases recently identified in Waterhouse, St. Andrew were sporadic and highlight the need for cooperation in preventing further spread.

She says members of the public are reminded to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing light coloured clothes when out at nights.

Persons are also encouraged to use insect repellants, bed nets, and to open their windows and doors during spraying.

Dr. Lewis-Fuller, says Jamaica is now at the lowest endemic level possible according to World Health Organization classification, however the country must exercise continued vigilance to prevent any explosive outbreak.
