The St. Mary police are searching for a suspect in connection with a murder committed on Thursday in the parish.
The deceased has been identified as Ryan Prendergast, of Belfield Penn.
It's reported that about 2:45 p.m., Mr. Prendergast and another man went on a property at Belfield Penn and picked apples.
On their way from the property they were confronted by the suspect who said he was paying lease for the property and questioned their authority to pick the apples.
The suspect then pulled a firearm from his waistband and opened fire in the direction of both men, hitting Mr. Prendergast to the upper body.
He died at the scene.
The second man managed to escape unhurt.
The police say three spent casings were recovered at the scene.
