A statement from Richard Brown, read by his attorney Rita Allen Brown
By Racquel Porter
Richard Brown, one of two men who pleaded guilty last month to kidnapping and killing 27-year-old Toshyna Patterson and 10-month-old Sarayah Paulwell, was on Wednesday sentenced to 30 years imprisonment on two counts of murder before the Home Circuit Court.
He was also sentenced to one year and ten months imprisonment each for two counts of kidnapping.
The sentences, which are to run concurrently, come weeks after shocking details of the kidnapping and killing of Ms. Patterson and her child were revealed by prosecutors.
Brown, who had negotiated a plea deal with the Director of Public Prosecutions, is to serve 20 years before being eligible for parole.
He had earlier pleaded guilty for his role as the driver who transported Ms. Patterson and her daughter, along with the shooter and others from Stony Hill to a site in East Kingston where the mother and child were killed and their bodies burned.
Prosecutors say he also accepted part-payment from Leoda Bradshaw on behalf of his co-conspirators for the execution of the plan to kidnap the mother and her baby.
Brown was represented by attorneys Valerie Neita-Robertson KC and Rita Allen Brown.
Following the sentence, Brown, in a letter read by his attorney, begged Jamaica and the family of the victims for forgiveness.
"I just want to do the right thing. I want my lawyer to tell the family of the baby and mother and to Jamaican public that I am very sorry for the loss of their lives. I want my lawyer to also tell my mentor that I'm very sorry for the disappointment. I hope one day everyone will find it possible to forgive me," the letter read.
Roshane Miller gets 7-year sentence
Another defendant, Roshane Miller, who brokered a deal with prosecutors, will serve just over seven years behind bars for his role in the matter.
Miller was sentenced to seven years and 10 months each on two counts of accessory before the fact to murder as well as two years 10 months each on two counts of conspiracy to kidnap.
Miller has also been sentenced to one year and 10 months for misprision of felony.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
Miller had previously pleaded guilty to participating in the planning of the murder of Ms. Patterson and her child.
But in a statement Wednesday afternoon, the Director of Public Prosecutions said there was no evidence to show that Miller was on the scene on the day of the kidnapping and murders.
The crown said there was also no evidentiary material to show that he participated in the actual kidnapping and murder on September 9, 2023.
Miller was represented by attorneys Christopher Townsend and Chadwick Berry.
US Navy officer Leoda Bradshaw, who prosecutors listed as the mastermind behind the plot, and her cousin Roland Balfour are also charged in the matter.
