The Manchester Municipal Corporation is calling for increased allocation from the Ministry of Local Government to enable councillors to better meet the needs in their divisions.

Councillor for the Grove Town division, Iceval Brown, moved the petition at the municipal corporation's recent monthly meeting.

Councillor Brown noted that with the recent rainfall, a number of roads in her division have been damaged, leaving pools of water collected in potholes for days.

This, she said, raises concerns about the breeding of mosquitoes and the spread of dengue.

"If you would take a drive in some of the divisions and see the roads right now, the conditions they are in....We need money to fix some of the bad roads. Persons are complaining bitterly," she advised.

Councillor Brown's petition received support from Chairman of the corporation and Councillor for the Royal Flat division, Donovan Mitchell, who said he was still awaiting word from the ministry concerning funds for road work, dengue prevention as well as general cleanup.

"But while we wait, people have been hospitalised. Hospitals are full to the brim. People are just suffering, and so we are making it our appeal to the minister to at least say to us if there is any funding coming for the cleanup of the divisions," he said.
