Mario Deane trial adjourned early due to unavailability of police witness

By Kimone Witter

The trial of the three police officers implicated in the death of Mario Deane was adjourned early on Monday in the Westmoreland Circuit Court due to the unavailability of a police witness.

The prosecution's second witness, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Francis, was scheduled to continue his evidence-in-chief and be cross examined.

But the court was told that DSP Francis is sick and seeking medical attention.

The trial is to resume Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., with evidence from DSP Francis who has indicated that he should by then have recovered.

The court heard on Friday that DSP Francis had the responsibility of overseeing the Barnett Street Police Station in St. James, where Mario Deane was beaten on August 3, 2014.

But, while testifying, he revealed that at the time of the incident, he was on sick leave.
