Market supply for some crops still steady despite hurricane's impact - JACRA

JACRA Director General Wayne Hunter

The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) says market supply for certain crops remains steady despite the impact of Hurricane Beryl on the agriculture sector.

JACRA says the early stage of development of some crops prevented things from being worse.

The Authority regulates coffee, cocoa, coconut and spices, including turmeric, pimento, ginger among others.

Director General Wayne Hunter, however, says large scale selling of these commodities will be impacted.

"Only in the dealership, in the trade, you would find that you will have insufficient for mass production or export. But someone who just wants some pimento to put in some porridge or some soup, they'll be able to get it. So you won't find a huge shortfall, or a widespread shortfall of the commodity," he explained.

He urged consumers to report any instance of price gouging.

JACRA has started distribution of additional seedlings for coffee, pimento and turmeric and ginger rhizome as well as chemical to control Coffee Leaf Rust.
