Massachusetts council approves pardoning people with misdemeanor cannabis convictions

A Massachusetts governor will pardon tens of thousands of people convicted of misdemeanor marijuana charges in the state, going back decades.

The pardons approved by the Governor's Council will take effect immediately, although officials say it will take some time to update state criminal records.

Governor Maura Healey says, with the pardon, thousands of Massachusetts residents will benefit from the lowering of the barriers they face when seeking housing, education or a job.

The pardons will apply to all adults convicted prior to March 13 in state court for possession of marijuana or a "Class D substance".

Most people will not need to take any action to have their criminal records updated.

The state also has set up an online page to facilitate requests for certificates confirming marijuana pardons.
