By Racquel Porter

Matthew Hyde, the university student accused of torturing his ex-girlfriend in his dorm room at The University of the West Indies, Mona, a year ago, has been further remanded until May 22, for further case management.

Mr Hyde is charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, use of malicious communication, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and false imprisonment

He is represented by attorneys Patrick Peterkin and Gnoj McDonald.

Prior to Monday's court proceedings, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn and Mr Hyde's legal team had made a joint request to have him examined by a forensic psychiatrist.

When the matter was called up Mr Peterkin informed Justice Vinnette Graham-Allen that he had not received the invoice for the doctor to be paid.

But Justice Graham-Allen advised Mr Peterkin that he's to obtain the invoice from  the doctor.

Mr Peterkin also informed the court that his client's social enquiry and antecedent reports are crucial for him to be examined.

The antecedent report was presented, but the court was told that the social enquiry report is outstanding and is likely to be completed within the next three weeks.

Meanwhile, Obeka Gordon, the attorney watching proceedings for the complainant,  informed the court through the prosecution that an issue arose which requires further discussion with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The case arose from allegations that from February 6 to 9, 2023, Mr Hyde locked his ex-girlfriend inside his room at the University of the West Indies Mona campus, where he repeatedly burned her with a clothes iron all over her body.

The young woman was rescued and a report made to the police.

Mr Hyde was arrested and charged on February 13, 2023.
