McKenzie commits funds for drain cleaning in Green Pond, St. James

Desmond McKenzie

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has expressed concern over the state of infrastructure in Capital Heights, Green Pond, St. James.

The minister toured the area following recent flooding.

"I saw from myself first-hand the condition of the drain, which is an old-earth drain, which exits into this drain, which takes it into the North Gully, and everybody knows that when Montego Bay floods at times, it is because of the lack of capacity of the North Gully. We can see here that there are real challenges," he admitted.

Mr. McKenzie said funds are to be made available to carry out clean-up activities.

"I am recommending to the MP and to the councillor and the municipality that we will provide the funds to clean the drain, because you have to clean sections of the drain in order to ascertain what needs to be done, and that is the first thing that we're going to be doing, is to clean the drain, so that the technical team can have a look to see the conditions that exist."
