Staff of the Medical Records Department at the St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital called in sick on Tuesday over what they say are severe health and safety issues stemming from deplorable working conditions.
On July 12 this year, a fire caused damage to parts of the Medical Records Department.
The Union of Technical Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP) says the staff is still required to access the file room, despite recommendations from firefighters that the room remains hazardous until a thorough cleaning has been conducted, which has not yet occurred.
UTASP says despite correspondence sent on July 16 to the Chief Executive Officer, there has been no acknowledgment of the letter, nor has there been any meeting or communication regarding the issues facing the workers.
The union says the health and safety of the staff and patients must be prioritised, and immediate action is required to rectify these unsafe conditions.
It says proper safety measures must be put in place before the staff can safely resume their duties.
The union says it is unable to say when there will be a return of normality as the staff is awaiting correspondence fromhospital management.
