Michael Hue to resign as Mayor as balance of power shifts in St. Thomas

By Prince Moore

Chairman of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Morant Bay Michael Hue is to resign from the post of Mayor.

His resignation will take effect on November 21.

Mayor Hue made the announcement during Thursday morning's sitting of the municipal corporation.

His resignation follows the death of Jamaica Labour Party Councillor Lenworth Rawle, which has shifted the balance of control of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

The Jamaica Labour Party and People's National Party each had five seats in the corporation, but with the passing of Mr. Rawle - who was Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Trinityville Division - the JLP is now left with four.

While announcing his resignation, Mayor Hue said he will continue as councillor for the Port Morant division.

He thanked members for their support as well as criticism, which, he said, "makes everyone stronger".

He also said he would offer support and advice to the new leader of the municipal corporation when that person assumes office.

New Deputy Mayor

Minority leader in the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and Councillor for the White Horses Division, Hubert Williams, was later appointed Deputy Mayor of Morant Bay.

Mr. Williams, who represents the People's National Party, was appointed by Mayor Hue.

Reacting to his appointment, Mr. Williams acknowledged that the "smooth transfer of power" was something "any mature democracy should be proud of".

But he noted that the moment was "bittersweet" as the municipal corporation continues to mourn the death of Councillor Rawle.

Mr. Williams is expected to assume the role of Mayor when Mr. Hue resigns.
