The death of a Jamaica Labour Party councillor has shifted the balance of control of  the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

The two political parties represented in the Corporation each had five seats, but with the passing of Lenworth Rawle, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Trinityville Division, the JLP's is now left with four.

Mr Rawle died in the United States where, Radio Jamaica News understands, he had gone to seek medical attention.

His passing leaves the People's National Party with a one-seat majority at the Municipal Corporation.

Mr Rawle served as Mayor of Morant Bay for a year.

James Robertson, MP for St. Thomas Western, responding to the passing of Councillor Rawle, characterised him as "a dedicated family man, a gentle giant of a person, loyal to a fault," and one who "believed in the people," who stayed close to them and contributed to nation building.
