Millions allocated to fight poverty

More than $600 million has been allocated to assist with the alleviation of poverty in Jamaica.

$612 million is to go to the Government's effort to consolidate the social safety net reform programme, through the Food Price Crisis Project.

The project will continue to January 2011.

The main objectives of the initiative are improving the welfare of beneficiaries on the PATH programme by increasing the subsidy provided and incorporating additional vulnerable households into the safety net.

A drive will take place to increase the number of PATH beneficiaries in Kingston and St. Andrew by 10% and achieve at least 82% school attendance among beneficiary children in grades 1 to 11.

In addition, it seeks to reduce the waiting period between enrolment and the first payment to six months and provide follow-up studies of beneficiaries in households with long-term programme participation.
