Minimum Wage decision to be known soon

A report outlining whether there should be an increase in the national minimum wage and the minimum rates for industrial security guards is now with the Ministry of Labour.

RJR News has been informed that the document was submitted by the National Minimum Wage Advisory Commission to the Ministry's Permanent Secretary just over a week ago.

The Commission concluded its island-wide consultations last year.

The minimum wage was last increased on March 1, 2016. It moved from $5,600 to $6,200 for a 40 hour work week.

The minimum wage for industrial security guards was increased from $204.97 cents per hour to $221.35 per hour for a 40-hour work week.

Too long

The Jamaica Household Workers Union has lamented that minimum wage earners have been waiting too long to hear if  they will be taking home more pay.

Shirley Pryce, president of the union, told RJR News that she has prepared a letter to be sent to the Ministry of  Labour raising concerns.

She highlighted the fact that the country had become accustomed to an annual increase in the minimum wage, hence the growing impatience with the delay on this occasion.

The Jamaica Household Workers Union has 5,700 members.
