Ministry of Labour probes fire at OLD Harbour KFC

An investigation is to be carried out by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security into Wednesday’s incident which resulted in several workers at the KFC branch in Old Harbour, St. Catherine being injured. Seven employees are being treated for burns they sustained following a fire.

Robert Chung, director of Occupational Safety and Health in the Ministry, told RJR News that an officer from the department will be assigned to carry out a probe. Mr. Chung expects to receive a report Thursday.

Reports are that the fire started in the kitchen at the restaurant. The branch is currently closed.

And, up to late Wednesday evening the injured KFC employees were still at hospital being treated. However, Restaurants of Jamaica, operators of KFC, said the injuries are not critical.

Tina Matalon, director of marketing, told RJR News that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“We are still in investigative mode…we have our teams on the ground currently. The facility is being investigated for an actual cause. At this time we do not have a cause for the incident, but what we do know that the incident is contained to a very specific area of the back-up house and of the kitchen. This did not actually affect any of the customer areas or any of the customers at the time in the restaurant,” said Ms Matalon.
