MOCA probing reports of people being charged to have electricity restored

The Major Organised Crime and Anti Corruption Agency (MOCA) is probing reports of people being charged to have their electricity restored after they lost power during Hurricane Beryl.

Residents in the rural communities of Westmoreland, Clarendon, and St. Catherine have expressed growing frustration over the slow restoration of electricity and have reported that they are being asked to make payments to have their power supply reconnected.

Major Basil Jarrett, Director of Communications of MOCA, said the agency is working with JPS to ensure that those responsible for the reported extortion, are identified, caught and held accountable for their actions.

In light of the investigation, members of the public who have information regarding these incidents are being asked to make a report via the MOCA tip line, 888-MOCA-TIP (888-662-2847). Major Jarrett sought to remind persons that all calls are anonymous and will be treated with the strictest confidence.

He also discouraged residents from paying to have their electricity restored as this not only perpetuates the cycle of corruption but is also illegal.
