A report from NBC News
Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine, which Jamaica is looking to access, could get emergency approval by US authorities as early as today.
A panel of expert advisors to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will meet to discuss whether to recommend that the agency authorise the vaccine.
Moderna's vaccine has been found to be more than 94% in preventing the spread of the virus, suggesting asymptomatic infection could be reduced by 63% after a single shot.
Health experts hope additional data in the next few weeks will confirm even higher levels of protection.
Like the already authorised Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna immunisation will require two shots.
But unlike Pfizer, the Moderna shot does not require ultra cold storage during shipping.
Jamaica's health ministry hopes to inoculate up to 450,000 people, or almost 16 per cent of the population, by the end of 2021.
