More than 300 farm workers departing for Canada this week

More than 300 Jamaican farm workers are scheduled to leave the island this week for Canada under the Government's Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme.

An official send-off ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Ministry of Labour & Social Security's Overseas Employment Centre on East Street, Kingston, before 103 departed.

Another 209 are set to leave Wednesday morning, bringing the total to 312 participants in this week's deployment.

Minister of Labour & Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr., who addressed the workers, highlighted the strong rate of returning workers.

From January 1 to June 30, the Ministry, through the Overseas Employment Programme, facilitated the placement of 6,886 workers in Canada, the United States, and Guantanamo Bay.

Of this total, approximately 63.7 per cent (4,393) were placed in Canada, while 2,482 secured opportunities in the United States.

Additionally, eleven workers were deployed to Guantanamo Bay.
