One of the municipal policemen seen in a video using a sledgehammer to destroy a handcart and goods belonging to vendors in Linstead, St. Catherine says a full investigation was not carried out into the incident prior to him being suspended.

Lenworth Grant, who is employed to the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation, said he was deployed to be part of a joint operation by the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation to clear the streets of illegal vendors.

He said after deciding to confiscate the handcart from a man who was vending illegally, the man began behaving boisterously.

Mr. Grant said a decision was made to dismantle the handcart so it could fit into a truck which was used to carry goods that were seized.

"Upon hearing this, the man took the cart and he flipped it. He flipped the cart over with the food, spread the food all over the streets. So after that was done, we engaged into dismantling the cart. The video was made of us dismantling the cart but nobody actually saw the part of where we approached the man, the man flipping his own cart with the food into the streets, littering the streets. Nobody actually saw that," he explained.

Furthermore, Mr. Grant said he is puzzled that the Jamaica Constabulary Force has distanced itself from the operation considering "it was a joint effort by the municipal corporation and the JCF."
