The authorities at Caymanas Track Limited are trying to determine the source of a mysterious illness which has led to the deaths of more than a dozen horses at the race track since last week.
Racehorse trainers and owners have been left baffled as twelve thoroughbreds have died since Thursday.
Vin Edwards, President of the Jamaica Racehorse Trainers Association, told RJR News that they have been trying to determine the source of the deadly outbreak.
“Some of us have sent samples abroad and we have got back results stating that the disease could come from cattle or chicken feed. The reality right now is that we would like to find out what caused this. The samples and blood were sent to Canada….”
“The muscles of the back quarters seem to be the area that gives trouble, the walk with a wobble and then they have a high fever which caused the death” Edwards said.
Trainers and the owners will be meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the crisis.
