Opposition Spokesman on Land Lothan Cousins has pledged that a future PNP administration will make more government lands available to provide security of tenure for thousands of Jamaicans.
Mr Cousins, making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate on Tuesday, said long-term occupants of government-owned lands, will be given the opportunity to purchase them.
He stressed that regularising informal settlements will generate revenue through formal leasing and sales.
He explained that the PNP's approach would model what was done in Dominica, "where the government undertook a radical land titling programme by distributing government lands to those who are already in possession."
"This was done, in some instances, by selling the land at a percentage of the market value to those who already occupy them," he said.
Reflecting on the fact that, in 2018, nine-hundred and seventy-five thousand Jamaicans were in the age group zero to 39, he said "most of these Jamaicans are among the most directly affected by the deep lack of access to affordable land and housing."
As part of a broader push for affordability, Mr Cousins reiterated the PNP's proposal to remove the cost of land from National Housing Trust unit prices if it forms the next government.
