National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has confirmed that more than 200 illegal firearms and over 40,000 rounds of ammunition were intercepted by the police on Tuesday at the island's ports.
The cache includes 74 rifles and 159 handguns.
"It was reported, and I must indicate reported a bit early, but we are dealing with that. But I think the country would be happy to know we intercepted 233 firearms coming into the country.... That can equip more than a company of soldiers," said the security minister, who noted that the count continues.
Dr. Chang lamented that the organisers of crime, those who send such shipments, are "worse than the shooters".
"That level of ammunition on the streets, with these weapons designed to create mayhem, by a distorted and cruel mind... must be stopped," he declared.
The minister was speaking Thursday afternoon at a post-Cabinet press briefing.
The shipment was intercepted at a warehouse along Industrial Terrace in Kingston.
The guns and ammunition were found concealed in a shipment of water heaters from the United States.
There have been several shipments of weapons seized after the ports over the last few months.
