National Security Ministry in talks with FLA management to end staff strike

By Clinton McGregor

Officials of the Ministry of National Security are in talks with the management of the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) in a bid to end the protest action by staff of the entity.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry met with the management Wednesday and further talks are expected Thursday.

Operations at the agency are at a standstill as employees stayed away for a second day Wednesday in response to what they describe as an unsatisfactory compensation package.

A release from the FLA said the entire staff complement walked off the job Tuesday.

The Authority outlined that after months of negotiations, the Ministry of Finance has stated that there will be no change in salaries for the staff.

The workers say they view the Ministry's response as a disregard for their right to proper compensation.

They say they are no longer interested in continuing discussions on the salary package and are seeking the intervention of the government at the highest level.

The protest action is affecting people seeking to renew their firearm licence.

It is also affecting the storage of weapons for licensed firearm holders seeking to travel overseas and for those seeking to retrieve their weapons from storage, having returned to the island.
