NEPA identifies regulatory breaches at Jamaica Zoo

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has identified breaches of the regulatory instruments issued to Jamaica Zoo Attractions, which is in the spotlight after a viral video showed a worker being bitten by a lion.

Another video has also been circulating showing a female worker taunting the lions for visitors.

A media release from NEPA indicated that the incidents were believed to have occurred over the weekend.

A team from the agency along with other State agencies visited the zoo in Lacovia, St. Elizabeth on Monday as part of an investigation.

NEPA says the areas of non-compliance were discussed.

Issues of animal health and welfare were identified to be addressed.

NEPA says a report on the findings is being prepared to determine the final action to be taken.

Jamaica Zoo has two Environmental Permits under the Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act and a Wildlife Exemption Certificate issued under the Wild Life Protection Act.
