Minister Mike Henry has shrugged off assertions of extravagant spending on the
state-owned house which he currently occupies.
A newspaper report Sunday highlighted the $60 million purchase and refurbishment of the Upper St. Andrew property which was described as an inappropriately lavish expenditure against the background of the economic challenges facing the country.
But Mr. Henry says the money spent was justified.
He told RJR News the house was in an extreme state of disrepair and unsuitable for occupancy.
"I don't have time to follow PNP (People's National Party) political rubbish. What they must look at is what the house was like before I moved in and before the Port Authority bought it and upgraded it.
"I've never been accustomed to living in squalor," said Mr. Henry.
It is reported that the property was previously owned by the now defunct Jamaica Omnibus Service but was later purchased by the Port Authority of Jamaica.
