Prime Minister Andrew Holness
Some residents of Board Villa in West Kingston are to be relocated to a section of Denham Town, to be known as the Victoria Palms Housing Development.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Friday morning broke ground for construction of the multiple storey units at a site adjacent to St. Alban's Primary School.
The $71 million development will consist of 20 two-bedroom units and three three-bedroom units.
The project is being jointly financed by the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, which is contributing $50 million, and the Ministry of Local Government, which will contribute $21 million.
Mr. Holness said construction is expected to last for nine months.
The Prime Minister added that there are plans to improve conditions for residents who will remain at Board Villa.
He revealed that a visit to the area two years ago had deeply affected him after he saw the "conditions under which persons were living there".
Apart from the housing conditions, Mr. Holness said the area was overcrowded.
