Weekend curfew changes announced Tuesday by Prime Minister Andrew Holness have found favour with financial analyst Dennis Chung who describes them as more practical for Jamaica's economic circumstances.
Mr. Holness said the weekend lockdowns will not be extended. However, he announced tighter curfew measures for the next three weekends.
On Saturdays, the curfew will begin at 4:00 p.m. while the measure will start at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. The weekday curfew remains at 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Mr. Chung says the adjustments, which will be in place until May 4, will allow for flexibility in the economy.
"People will be able to hustle, which a lot of people do on weekends. I mean, we have a highly informal economy," he pointed out, adding that while the government's E-commerce National Delivery System (ENDS) is a good programme, "the myriad of people who sell with stalls and at the stoplight" are not eligible to participate.
Donovan Wignall, President of the Micro Small and Medium Sized Enterprise Alliance, has said his members welcome the extended hours especially on Saturdays.
He said based on "the full picture...the curfew hours are fine for now; it allows additional commerce."
He noted that the only people "left out of the mix" is the entertainment sector but admitted he understood that "could not go on right now because of the protocols we have."
Mr. Wignall and Mr. Chung men were speaking Wednesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
