Niger has announced three days of mourning after an armed group killed 20 troops and one civilian in the jihadist controlled western section of the country.
Nine people are said to have been wounded in the attack.
The defence ministry says dozens of the assailants were killed and that aerial and ground reinforcements were being deployed to track down the rest of the attackers.
Three days of national mourning began Wednesday with flags lowered to half-mast.
