No need for Holness to resign, gov't senator insists

Government Senator Sherene Golding Campbell, responding to Beyond the Headlines host Dionne Jackson Miller

Government Senator Sherene Golding Campbell is adamant that Prime Minister Andrew Holness should remain in office amid the investigation into his financial affairs.

There has been mounting pressure from the parliamentary opposition and civil society groups following release of the Integrity Commission report.

Senator Golding Campbell said she is uncomfortable with the Integrity Commission's handling of aspects of the probe.

She said there is no conflict at this point with the Prime Minister remaining in office.

"Because the Director of Investigations, as is the process he is given under the Act, under the Integrity Commission Act, has not sought his sit to put these other matters before the Director of Corruption Prosecution," she argued.

She further criticised the Director of Investigations, contending that an incomplete investigation at this time is "hogwash... because he had at all times during the three years the ability to go to the FID (Financial Investigations Division) and seek collaboration with them to complete his investigation".

Senator Golding Campbell was speaking on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines with host Dionne Jackson Miller.

In December 2021, the Integrity Commission and the FID signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at fostering a strategic working relationship in which information-sharing is at its core.

The Integrity Commission has indicated that it referred its investigation report into the Prime Minister's financial affairs to the FID.

The FID confirmed Thursday that it was in receipt of a communication from the Integrity Commission, and would now seek to determine what, if any, specific area of the report may be probed in keeping with its mandate.
