A report from Radio Jamaica's legal analyst Dionne Jackson Miller
By Dionne Jackson Miller
It was revealed on Friday that the Court of Appeal has sent back two cases to the Supreme Court for retrial in the last six years.
The Court of Appeal had asked for a status report on the cases as it considers whether to order a retrial in the Vybz Kartel murder case.
The matter of Trevor Taffe, who had been convicted of a 2012 murder, was sent back for retrial in September 2022.
Roshon Hamilton had been convicted of a 2008 murder. His case was sent back for retrial in September 2023.
No retrial date has so far been set in either case.
Both men are in custody.
The court of appeal had asked for the information to help it understand how long it might take to have a retrial in the Kartel case.
The Supreme Court also said trials being heard by a judge alone are now being set for late 2025 and jury trials for late 2026.
There is, however, an expedited process for priorities matters depending on the circumstances.
