The People's National Party has declared that it will not be backing down from its opposition to the appointment of chartered accountant and public commentator Dennis Chung as a Chief Technical Director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).

The appointment came into effect today, June 2.

Former PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips outlined the PNP's stance at a protest outside National Heroes Circle in Kingston on Monday morning, flanked by several PNP spokespersons and supporters, as they faced the Minister of Finance and the Public Service building, Dr. Phillips said Mr. Chung's appointment cannot be allowed to stand.

"We're going to protest today. And if it takes a week, a month, a year, we will not let it stand. And let me tell you why, cause we don't have any personal feelings against Dennis Chung. He is not qualified to do the job. Plain and simple," asserted the former party president.

Dr. Phillips said it would be the best interest of Mr. Chung to refuse the position.

He repeated the PNP's contention that outside of his lack of qualifications, Mr. Chung has compromised himself with his public comments defending Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness in relation to his financial affairs which have been referred to the FID for further investigation.

He added that if the appointment is to remain, it will weaken the country's financial integrity internationally.

"We have to understand that what he is doing, what the Prime Minister is doing by appointing an unqualified person is destroying the foundations of the financial standing of Jamaica that we have all worked towards for many, many years."

As Dr. Phillips spoke, Member of Parliament for St. Catherine South Eastern, Robert Miller, clad in green, drove slowly past the crowd with his windows down, eliciting sounds and shouts of "Power!".

PNP supporter Altimond Marsh expressed joy that Monday morning's protest at Heroes Circle was incident-free.

"We are happy to know that we never have any need for the police because we never here to make any war. We are just here to make our voices heard and to send a message to the government that we don't appreciate what is taking place," said Mr. Marsh.

He urged Mr. Chung to step aside.
