NRSC optimistic new police commissioner will help boost road safety strategies

Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Dr. Lucien Jones, believes the appointment of Dr. Kevin Blake as Commissioner of Police will significantly help to create strategies to reduce road fatalities in Jamaica.

Dr. Jones notes that Dr. Blake previously served as former head of traffic in the police force and has first-hand knowledge of the challenges associated with road safety.

"We look forward to working with him and anticipate the renewed commitment from this high office, which has been the case with past commissioners. While we welcome this 14 per cent fall in road deaths for this year, 71 is still far too high in mid-March. The target is a bit below four hundred this year and we will need the entire country to be mobilised to work together as a matter of priority to achieve this goal. Dr. Blake's appointment then in this context is very encouraging," said the NRSC vice chairman.

Dr. Blake will assume duties as Commissioner next Tuesday.
