NRSC vice chair seeks meeting with PM to discuss deadly road crashes

Dr. Lucien Jones

Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones is seeking an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Andrew Holness following a series of road deaths over the last few days.

In the latest incident, three people were killed in a motor vehicle crash on the Dunn's River main road in St. Ann on Wednesday night.

Data from the Road Safety Council show that the country has recorded 112 road fatalities since January, compared to 114 road deaths over the same period last year.

Dr. Jones said the early gains made in reducing road fatalities have been wiped out by the carnage which has been recorded since the start of the year.

He said he will be seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Holness, who is the Chairman of the NRSC, to discuss further measures to stem the crisis.

"Since the beginning of April, 10 people have died on our roads - 10 in four days. This is a major disaster and calamity. And the options for rescuing our nation from this kind of carnage are not many as people continue to speed and drive recklessly," he bemoaned.

Dr. Jones suggested that increased police enforcement and the messages from public education campaigns have fallen on deaf ears.

"Yes, there are issues in terms of fixing our roads, but the common theme is that people are not staying in their lane," he said.

Still, he encouraged the police to continue to increase the level of enforcement on roads, and urged the government and private sector to provide the necessary resources to carry out sustained and frequent public education campaigns across the country.

He also called for the breathalyser programme to be boosted to target drunk drivers.
