NSWMA awaiting funds to begin work on disposal site at Winchester, St. Thomas

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is ready to proceed with work on the proposed disposal site at Winchester in St. Thomas, once funds are identified and earmarked.

The site will replace the existing facility at Church Corner in Morant Bay.

Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the NSWMA, told the JIS that preliminary activities, including acquisition of the 12-acre property in Winchester at a cost of $23 million, have been completed.

The project is expected to cost $267.9 million.

The Church Corner waste disposal site is being removed in light of concerns over the potential environmental and health hazards it poses, particularly in light of  the facility reaching capacity earlier in the year.

The new disposal site will also benefit residents of a number of communities in eastern Portland.
