NSWMA examines options to repair disabled garbage trucks

Noel Arscott, Minister of Local Government, has revealed that six of the 15 garbage trucks operated by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) are not operational.

Mr Arscott was answering questions tabled in Parliament by his Opposition counterpart, Desmond McKenzie.

Mr. McKenzie sought answers from Mr. Arscott on whether arrangements were being made to repair the trucks.

“The matter is under constant review. We are examining several options including public/private partnerships in terms of trying to create a more modern and efficient service. So I am sorry I am not in a position at this time to give you a concrete timeline. But certainly I will keep the Parliament updated on the progress from time to time and, hopefully we will be able to achieve the desired objective in the shortest possible time,” said Mr. Arscott.

It was also revealed that 109 private contractors were hired to assist with clean-up operations, following the passage of Hurricane Sandy in October. The exercise cost the Government J$80 million.
