NSWMA still battling smoke nuisance following Riverton City dump fire

NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says progress is being made in reducing the smoke emanating from Wednesday's fire at the Riverton City disposal site in St. Andrew.

NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon says teams have now contained about 60 per cent of the affected area.

He is optimistic that the smoke will be significantly reduced by nightfall.

"The wind is pushing the smoke towards the hills, so we have to be working behind the smoke... and I am taking a look at the Riverton as we speak and the smoke is thinning out by the minute. But we have work to do because it’s a big area, and when you talk about a 40 per cent coverage to be done, you still have some way to go," he disclosed.

The smoke has affected air quality in St. Catherine and St. Andrew.

A truck that was transporting burning garbage is suspected to have triggered the fire at the disposal site.
