Residents and businesses in West Kingston will get relief soon from the sewage which has been flowing on roads in the community, as the National Water Commission (NWC) started work to address the situation on Saturday.

RJR News received reports Saturday morning that the situation had become untenable for personnel at Denham Town police station, which is being affected by the constant flow of sewage from manholes.

Pedestrians, including children at the Denham Town Primary School, have also been affected.

NWC President Mark Barnett, said the problem is due mainly to blocked sewer mains.

"As you know, we have done some work along North Street, (as) there was a constant problem. So we're now moving towards western North Street to have all the blockages and siltation that occurred in the sewer cleared," he outlined.

He said while the NWC is currently working to clear overflows on the streets, removing debris from the sewers will effectively take a longer time.

"What we're doing is a thorough clearing of the entire area, so while we will relieve the current situation, that in no means will really solve the problem; so it will take more than a week or two to be done," he declared.
