The National Water Commission (NWC) says there will be need for additional water storage facilities in Portmore, St. Catherine if the Government is to proceed with plans for the municipality becoming Jamaica's 15th parish.
NWC President Mark Barnett said there is currently adequate water storage. However, with the development that is expected with the change in status, the storage will not be sufficient.
"We currently have a major storage facility that commands most of the supply, if you will, in Portmore... But importantly, there must be the need for consideration of additional reservoir for the city when it is so decided," he said.
He was addressing Thursday's sitting of the Joint Select Committee examining the possibility of Portmore becoming Jamaica's 15th parish.
Mr. Barnett said the NWC is also cognizant of the need for reliable water supply and is pursuing the increase in production along the Rio Cobre.
He said this should be completed in two years.
