Old Harbour butcher selling bad meat

The St. Catherine Parish Council is demanding that the Health Department revoke the licence of an Old Harbour meat shop operator.

The council says the operator has been repeatedly caught selling unfit meat to consumers.

The matter came to light at the recent sitting of the Council after Esworth Frankson, Councillor for Old Harbour Division disclosed to his colleagues that health department personnel carried out two successive operations at the meat shop.

Following the council meeting, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Mayor of Spanish Town told RJR News that the Council will be taking action against the butcher.

In July, the Health Department dispatched a team of inspectors to the area after receiving information the operator was selling un-inspected meat.

It was later found that the carcasses of pigs, goats and chicken were discoloured and smelly.

Clampdown on locations for slaughter houses

And the, St. Catherine Health Department has moved to clamp down on butchers who continue to slaughter animals in flood prone areas in sections of the parish.

The move comes against the background of the recent heavy rains which caused the Rio Cobre to overflow it banks, washing away several structures.

Anthony Thomas, Chief Public Health Inspector for the parish told our news centre that no new construction will be allowed in these areas.

"Hence, the butchers need to make representation to the local Parish Council to identify appropriate lands where centralized slaughter activities can take place," he said.
