One vendor at Boston Jerk Centre gets greenlight to resume operations

By Kimone Witter

One of three jerk vendors who operate from the famous Boston Jerk Centre in Portland has been given the go-ahead to resume selling to customers.

Medical Officer of Health for Portland Dr. Sharon Lewis told Radio Jamaica News that the closure order was lifted for that individual at 5 p.m. Monday after it was determined that all of the sanitation requirements were complied with.

A team from the health department returned to the facility on Monday for a follow-up visit after it was announced last week that the closure order would be extended for the vendors.

Dr. Lewis says the second vendor is working on fixing a critical issue, while a third is not ready to operate as there are several breaches to be remedied.

She says the health department will be back at the facility on Tuesday and hopefully more progress will be made.

Dr. Lewis has lamented that it took the September 6 closure to get the vendors to comply with repeated requests to rectify significant breaches, including ineffective pest control, improper disposal of solid waste and lack of handwashing stations.
