With COVID-19 containment measures set to expire next week, Opposition Leader Mark Golding says the government should discontinue no-movement days on Sundays.

Mr. Golding says no-movement days are ineffective in limiting the spread of the coronavirus.

"I find the concept of the lockdown difficult to fathom and I'm not convinced that it achieves any particular objective and I'm against rules that encourage bungling of persons or congestion," he contended.

While he is glad the lockdown has been reduced to just one day, Mr. Golding argued that "that needs further adjustment" as the measure is no longer necessary.

Instead, the Opposition Leader believes the government should focus its message on getting Jamaicans to comply with the mask-wearing order and adhere to physical distancing guidelines.

He suggested churches and other organisations must continue to help promote the need for vaccination, noting that under the current circumstances, the country needs to be "encouraging people rather than attempting to force them through punitive measures".

Mr. Golding was speaking on Tuesday during a media briefing called by the People's National Party (PNP).
