The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) has sought a declaration from the courts on the constitutionality of the continued use of States of Public Emergency by the government to fight crime.
The government has repeatedly declared states of emergency since 2017 to deal with the effects of criminality.
The PNP has stated its opposition to the continued use of the measure, opting to vote against any futher extension.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Opposition Leader Mark Golding said the PNP has filed an action in the Constitutional Court seeking a declaration on the issue.
Mr. Golding maintained that the use of the states of emergency as a continuous crime fighting tool violates the Charter of Rights and is unconstitutional.
His announcement of the PNP's court action follows the government's declaration Tuesday morning of states of emergency in Clarendon and St. James.
