Opthalmologist being questioned in tax evasion probe

A St. Andrew-based Opthalmologist is being questioned by detectives assigned to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).

It is understood that the detectives swooped down on the doctor's office in Premier Plaza, as part of  what RJR sources say is a tax investigation.

The opthalmologist, who is also a leading cataract specialist, is said to be co-operating with investigators. The operation got underway shortly after mid-day.

MOCA detectives, some with evidence bags, were seen entering and leaving the premises.

At least one attorney was seen entering the building.

Monday’s operation is part of Tax Administration Jamaica's (TAJ), billion dollar tax evasion probe.

In July, a TAJ employee, Christopher Moore, was charged with manipulating the system at the tax Department and reducing tax assessments of hundreds of companies and individuals.

After the TAJ assessed taxpayers, Moore entered the computer system and reduced the tax levied.
