With the Atlantic hurricane season to start Thursday, the Parliamentary Opposition is expressing concern that the country's infrastructure is not prepared for heavy showers that may be associated with the season.
In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Opposition Spokesman on Works Mikael Phillips said several areas islandwide would be severely affected by heavy and sustained rainfall.
"If we were to get to rains in the next few days or even an active hurricane season in a few days or months, Jamaica would not be ready. Our drains are not adequately cleaned," he warned.
Mr. Phillips argued that he has "not seen any advance being made" by either the Ministry of Local Government or the National Works Agency "to do some major preparations that would be needed, seeing that the hurricane season is just a few days away".
He also complained that what has been allocated to each Member of Parliament to carryout works in their constituency is "woefully inadequate".
